چکیده
We describe the MR appearance of kernicterus (bilirubin encephalopathy). T2-weighted images show high signal bilaterally in the globus pallidus, a known area of cerebral deposition of bilirubin.

Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Findings of Children with Kernicterus
BACKGROUND The term kernicterus, or bilirubin encephalopathy, is used to describe pathological bilirubin staining of the basal ganglia, brain stem, and cerebellum, and is associated with hyperbilirubinemia. Kernicterus generally occurs in untreated hyperbilirubinemia or cases where treatment is delayed. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based studies have shown characteristic findings in kernict...
متن کامل1H MR spectroscopic characteristics of kernicterus: a possible metabolic signature.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE MR examination of infants with kernicterus shows abnormal changes in signal intensity in various parts of the brain, including the globus pallidus and subthalamic regions. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively analyze proton ((1)H) MR spectroscopic data to see if the MR spectroscopic profiles of infants with hyperbilirubinemia and symptoms of kernicterus provid...
متن کاملMagnetic resonance imaging of the brain in children with chronic kernicterus.
Advances in perinatal monitoring and early treatment for hyperbilirubinemia in high-risk patients have greatly reduced the incidence of kernicterus. Findings on MRI in patients with kernicterus are characteristic. The most characteristic pattern of neuropathological lesions in kernicterus is symmetric and highly selective involvement of the basal ganglia. In this study, we report the MRI findin...
متن کاملChanges in globus pallidus with (pre)term kernicterus.
OBJECTIVE We report serial magnetic resonance (MR) and sonographic behavior of globus pallidus in 5 preterm and 3 term infants with kernicterus and describe the clinical context in very low birth weight preterm infants. On the basis of this information, we suggest means of diagnosis and prevention. METHODS Charts and MR and ultrasound images of 5 preterm infants and 3 term infants with suspec...
متن کاملStudies in kernicterus. I. The protein binding of bilirubin.
The yellow staining of basal ganglia (kernicterus) in some jaundiced newborn infants has been recognized for many years (1). The association between serum bilirubin concentration and kernicterus (2, 3), the isolation of bilirubin from kernicteric brains (4, 5), and the toxic effect of bilirubin in vitro upon oxygen uptake (6) and oxidative phosphorylation (7) are further evidence of a relations...
